Classic wooden gazebo with hewn posts and railings No. 16-2

Classic wooden gazebo with hewn posts and railings No. 16-2

In short: Classic wooden gazebo No. 16-2 is an open square gazebo whose shingle roof is held up by hewn square posts with diagonal braces. Railings with upright balusters are built on three sides, while the fourth is left open for the entrance. The gazebo stands on a paved area. The size, finishing and equipment are agreed individually.

A classic wooden gazebo: order and clear lines

In most Laukbaldis gazebos natural trunks and branches predominate. This work shows another direction, the classic one. All the posts are straight, hewn, with a square cross-section, and the railings consist of identical upright balusters. The gazebo looks neat, symmetrical and calm. It will suit places where natural-shape wood would look too wild.

A gazebo like this goes easily with various houses: brick, wooden or plastered. Clear lines and a warm wood shade do not compete with the architecture of the house but complement it. That is why a classic gazebo is often chosen for city or suburban yards, public spaces and homesteads where a more restrained look is wanted.

Despite its stricter forms, the gazebo stays warm. The wood is painted in a rich honey shade, and the roof shingles give it a traditional coziness. It is a structure that looks neither too rustic nor too modern.

A classic gazebo also suits places where many different people will use it: the grounds of hotels or guest houses, parks, community centers or schools. A tidy, symmetrical form looks right in such places, and sturdy hewn posts and railings stand up to intensive use. In a private yard it becomes an elegant relaxation corner that is easy to decorate with plants or lamps.

Hewn posts with a profiled transition

The roof is held up by four corner posts. An interesting detail can be seen at the bottom: the lower part of the post is wider, and the transition to the narrower upper part is chamfered. That creates a profiled transition that recalls the base of a column. This small detail gives the posts elegance and at once sets handwork apart from a plain square timber.

The surface of the posts is smooth but not glossy: the growth rings and branch spots can be seen clearly. As in other Laukbaldis products, the natural marks of the wood are not hidden here. They make the gazebo livelier and remind you that it is a structure of wood and not of an artificial material.

The balusters of the railings are also square and match the main posts. The whole construction forms a unified system: the thicker elements carry the roof, and the thinner ones form the network of the railings.

Hewn posts have a practical advantage too. Their flat faces are convenient for fixing hooks, lamps or flower pot holders, and the corners are smooth and regular. If you later want to add something to the gazebo, for example curtains or a mosquito net, it is simpler to do with posts like these than with curved trunks.

Diagonal braces and a shingle roof

Diagonal braces are fitted between the posts and the roof beams on both sides of each post. Together with the post they form a silhouette resembling the letter Y, which can be seen from all sides. The braces stiffen the structure and keep it from swaying in the wind, and at the same time they become the main decorative motif of the gazebo.

The hip roof is tall and fairly steep. It is covered with wooden shingles laid in dense rows, and the edges are covered with wider boards. The roof edge projects beyond the posts, so rain does not get inside even when it falls with the wind. Under the roof the structure of beams and rafters can be seen: there is no ceiling, so it is spacious and tall inside.

Laukbaldis makes shingles for roofs, so this covering is a natural choice. Over time shingles outdoors darken and turn gray; this is the natural aging of wood, which can be slowed with protective products. Some customers like this patina and deliberately let the roof age.

A tall roof has another advantage: warm air collects under it, so on a hot day it is cooler below, at the level of the heads of those sitting. The open sides let the wind blow freely through the gazebo, so it does not get stuffy even in the greatest heat.

Railings on three sides

The lower part of the gazebo is surrounded by railings on three sides. They consist of a top and a bottom rail with identical upright balusters between them. The top of the railing is wide and flat: you can put a cup on it or rest your elbows. The fourth side is left open, so the gazebo is entered without obstacles. Since the gazebo stands right on the paving, there is neither a step nor a threshold: a stroller or a wheelchair could easily go in.

The railings are not tall, so they do not block the view. Sitting inside you can see the whole surroundings, and standing you can comfortably lean on them. At the same time they clearly mark the boundary of the gazebo and give a feeling of safety. Benches or chairs placed by the railings have support and do not move.

In the photo the gazebo is still empty, with no furniture. That lets you judge the interior space well. Benches can be placed by the railings and a table in the middle. UAB “Laukbaldis” also makes solid oak outdoor furniture, so it can be chosen to fit the size of the gazebo.

Fixed benches can also be built along the railings. Then the middle stays free for a table, and there are more seats than with separate chairs. A solution like this is especially useful in public places, where furniture should not be moved around. Which option to choose depends on how many people will usually be in the gazebo.

A gazebo on a paved area

In the photo the gazebo stands on a freshly laid area of concrete pavers. In the background you can see a territory that is still being landscaped: a sandy area, meadows and trees on a hillside. It is likely that a relaxation or public space is being created around it, and the gazebo is becoming one of its first accents. When the lawn turns green and plants grow around it, it will look even cozier.

A paved base has clear advantages. It is firm and level, mud does not collect on it, and after rain the water runs off quickly. Such an area is easy to clean, and furniture is convenient to move around on it. On the other hand, a wooden floor would give more warmth and coziness, so the base is worth choosing according to how you will use the gazebo.

If the gazebo is put on paving, it is handy to make the area larger than the gazebo itself. That leaves room around it to walk, to place chairs or flower pots, and the rain water running off the roof falls on a hard surface and not on the lawn.

It is important that the area is level and compacted, because that determines whether the posts will stand straight. The fixing of the gazebo to the base is worth discussing in advance, preferably before the pavers are laid, so that fixing points can be provided if needed.

Ordering and care

Laukbaldis shows only typical examples, so before calling think about a few things:

  • Size. How many people will sit inside and what furniture will be needed.
  • Railings. On which sides they will be and where you will leave the entrance.
  • Base. Pavers, a wooden floor or another solution according to your plot.
  • Roofing. Shingles or another covering that goes with the roof of the house.

Outdoor wood suffers most from moisture and the sun. Once a year inspect the bottoms of the posts, the tops of the railings and the ends of the balusters: water lingers longest there. If the surface has turned pale or rough, renew the protective coating made for exterior wood. Remove leaves and twigs from the roof. If the gazebo stands on paving, now and then check that water or sand does not collect around the bottoms of the posts: it is easy to sweep away, and then the wood stays dry longer.

You will find more examples in the section wooden gazebos. Compare it with the open gazebo with two sections No. 25-37, the gazebo with a shingle roof No. 16 and the gazebo with a shingle roof No. 26-1. Look for furniture for the interior in the section oak garden and outdoor furniture.

UAB “Laukbaldis” has made wooden products since 1996 and, as the company states, was the first in Lithuania to start making this production. Call +370 687 25388 and quote No. 16-2. During the call you will discuss the size, the railings, the roofing, the base and the furniture. If you have a plan of the yard or photos, have them ready in advance.

Do not hesitate to ask about changes. The website shows only typical examples, so the profile of the posts, the pattern of the railings or the height of the roof can be adapted to your house. The gazebo is made according to the agreed solutions, so it will suit your yard and not just the photo.

Frequently asked questions

How does a classic gazebo differ from a gazebo with trunks?

A classic gazebo uses straight hewn posts and identical balusters, so it looks more restrained. A gazebo with trunks has freer, more natural forms.

Can the gazebo be put on paving?

Yes, in the photo it stands on an area of concrete pavers. The base solution is worth discussing according to your plot and how you will use the gazebo.

Can a wooden floor be added?

It can. A wooden floor gives more coziness, and pavers are easier to look after, so choose according to your needs.

Can there be railings on all sides?

The layout of the railings is agreed individually. Usually at least one side is left open for the entrance.

What are the diagonal braces for?

The braces stiffen the structure and keep it from swaying in the wind. They are also an important decorative element of the gazebo.
