Gazebo with a gable roof and X-pattern railings No. 16-4

Gazebo with a gable roof and X-pattern railings No. 16-4

In short: Gazebo with a gable roof No. 16-4 is a spacious open gazebo whose roof is held up by hewn square posts with diagonal braces. Railings with an X pattern are built at the sides, and inside stand a solid table and benches with backrests and armrests. The gazebo stands on a paved area of tiles. The size, finishing and equipment are agreed with the customer individually.

A gazebo with a gable roof among fruit trees

This photo shows the gazebo already in use. On a spring or early summer day two people sit at a table under the roof, fruit trees are green all around, and on the right several big granite boulders lie on the ground. The gazebo has become a garden room here, a place you come to not for a moment but for a long conversation. A photo like this shows better than any description how much space there is inside and how comfortably you can settle in.

Many gazebos have a hip roof, so this one stands out at once. The gable roof gives it the silhouette of a simple house. Seen from the side you can see the long edge of the roof, and from the end a triangular gable. A roof like this looks calm and sturdy, recalls traditional country buildings and goes well with houses that have gable roofs.

The gazebo is rectangular and large enough for a long table and several benches to fit inside. Room is left between the furniture and the posts to walk through, so nobody has to squeeze past those sitting. A larger family or a group of friends can sit comfortably at a table like this.

In a garden under fruit trees the gazebo also gets natural shade. The surrounding trees cast shadow and hold back the wind, so it is even cooler on a hot day. In spring, when the garden is in bloom, sitting in the gazebo feels like being in a cloud of blossoms, and in summer the fruit ripens just a few steps from the table. It is a fine example of how a gazebo can become a natural part of a garden.

A gable roof: form and structure

The roof consists of two sloping planes that meet at the ridge. It is covered with a brown covering, and the edges project widely beyond the posts. At the right end the rafter ends are clearly visible: they stick out beyond the gable and create a decorative serrated edge. This detail stresses that the roof is wooden and the structure is not hidden.

A gable roof has practical advantages. Rain water runs off to only two sides, so it is easy to direct, for example, into a downpipe or a flower bed. On the long sides the roof casts a wide shadow, and the open ends let the wind blow through the gazebo, so it is cool there in summer. In addition, a gable roof leaves more room above your head, so the gazebo looks tall.

From inside you can see the beams, the rafters and the ridge beam. It is an open structure without a ceiling. It is easy to fix lamps or garlands to the beams, and the wood under the roof is well ventilated. In the evening, with a few lamps switched on under the ridge, the gazebo becomes a cozy garden living room where you can sit until late at night. Laukbaldis also makes wooden lamps, so the lighting can be discussed together with the gazebo.

When choosing a roof, think about how it will go with the other buildings in the yard. If the house or the outbuildings have gable roofs, a gazebo like this will form a unified ensemble with them. The roofing and its color can also be matched to the roof of the house.

The pitch of a gable roof can vary. A steeper roof looks taller and more traditional, while a flatter one looks more modern and less noticeable. The photo shows a fairly shallow pitch, so the gazebo looks low and nestled into the garden and does not block the fruit trees.

Hewn posts and X-pattern railings

The roof is held up by straight square posts. Diagonal braces are fixed on both sides of the top of each post, and together with the post they form a silhouette resembling the letter Y. The braces stiffen the structure and keep it from swaying, and at the same time they become the main decorative motif of the gazebo.

On both sides, between the posts, railings with an X pattern are built. They consist of a sturdy frame and two boards crossed diagonally. This pattern is typical of traditional country fences and gates, so the gazebo looks familiar and cozy. The top of the railing is wide: you can put a cup on it or lean on it.

The railings are not tall and do not block the view. Sitting at the table you can see the whole garden, while the railings mark the boundary of the gazebo and give a sense of safety. The front and back sides are left open, so you can enter the gazebo from both ends.

All the wooden elements are painted a warm honey shade, and the screw heads are left visible as fastening details. This strengthens the impression of a sturdy, handmade structure.

X-pattern railings have a practical use too: the diagonal boards stiffen the spans between the posts and additionally strengthen the structure from the sides. In addition, the railings can be used as a support for a bench: in the photo one bench is placed right against the railing, so a solid frame stands behind its backrest.

Solid furniture and a paved area of tiles

Inside stand a solid table with thick legs and several benches with backrests. The armrests and legs of the benches are curved, and the backrests consist of several crosswise boards. Furniture like this is heavy, stable and comfortable for sitting a long time. Its color goes with the posts of the gazebo, so the whole space looks unified.

UAB “Laukbaldis” makes solid oak outdoor furniture. It is created by experienced craftsmen from solid oak, so the table and benches can be ordered together with the gazebo and their size matched to the interior.

The gazebo stands on a light area of concrete tiles that is slightly wider than the roof. A base like this is firm, level and easy to look after: it can be swept or washed, and the furniture stands on it squarely. Sand can still be seen around the area: the garden is being landscaped, and soon the lawn will green around the gazebo.

If you want more coziness, you can choose a wooden floor instead of tiles. But tiles have advantages of their own: moisture does not collect on them, and heavy furniture leaves no dents.

It is important that the area is level and compacted, because it determines whether the posts will stand straight. The fixing of the gazebo to the base is worth discussing in advance, before the tiles are laid. Also think about where the water from the roof will go: a gable roof sends it to the two long sides, so the area should be wider there or a flower bed laid next to it.

What to discuss when ordering and how to look after it

Laukbaldis shows only typical examples, so before calling think about:

  • Size. How many people will usually sit at the table and what length of table will be needed.
  • Roof shape and covering. Whether a gable roof will go with your house and what color will suit.
  • Railings. On which sides they will be and which ends will stay open.
  • Base. Tiles, pavers or a wooden floor according to your plot.

Outdoor wood suffers most from moisture and the sun. Once a year inspect the bottoms of the posts and the tops of the railings: water lingers longest there. If the surface has turned pale or rough, renew the protective coating made for exterior wood. Under fruit trees the gazebo collects a lot of leaves and petals, so it is worth sweeping the roof in autumn and spring.

You will find more examples in the section wooden gazebos. Compare it with the classic wooden gazebo No. 16-2, the open gazebo with two sections No. 25-37 and the gazebo with a monopitch roof No. 25-43. Look for tables and benches in the section oak garden and outdoor furniture.
