Hexagonal playground gazebo with a green roof No. 20-1

Hexagonal playground gazebo with a green roof No. 20-1

In short: Playground gazebo No. 20-1 is a hexagonal wooden gazebo with a green asphalt shingle roof, brown hewn posts and yellowish railings with round and shaped openings cut out of them. Benches run along the railings inside. The gazebo stands in a children’s playground among apartment blocks. The size, colors and equipment are agreed individually.

A gazebo for a children’s playground: shelter from rain and sun

A gazebo comes in very handy in a children’s playground. Children spend a lot of time outdoors every day, so they need a place to take cover from rain, scorching sun or wind. A gazebo becomes that place: here they can sit, play quiet games, listen to a story or have a snack.

In the photo the gazebo stands in a fenced children’s area. Nearby you can see sandboxes with colorful edges, a yellow playhouse with brown trim, a bench and a green fence. Multi-story apartment buildings rise in the background, so the playground looks like a typical city courtyard space for children. The photo was taken in autumn: the paving slabs are wet and fallen leaves lie on the grass.

Here the gazebo stands on large concrete paving slabs that pave the path of the playground. A base like this is level and firm, and easy to sweep and wash. It matters to children that there are no puddles or mud around the gazebo, so a hard, level surface is very useful here.

The hexagonal shape is very convenient for a group of children. The children sit in a circle on the benches along the railings, so everyone can see each other and the adult in the middle. A space like this naturally invites chatting, singing or playing ring games.

A polygonal gazebo also looks good from every side. It has no “back”, so it can stand in the middle of the playground, and the children can come to it from any direction. Space is left around it for paths, benches and other equipment, so the playground stays tidy and clearly laid out.

A hexagonal shape and a green roof

The gazebo has six corners and six posts. The roof is multi-pitched, with all slopes meeting at one peak, and is covered with green asphalt shingles. Their edges are cut into hexagons, so the roof resembles scales or a honeycomb. The green goes nicely with the lawn, the trees and the other equipment in the playground. It is also soothing to the eye and stands out among the gray city buildings, so from afar the gazebo looks like a green island.

Under the edge of the roof you can see the ends of round rafters that stick out beyond the beams. The roof projects widely beyond the railings, so children sitting on the benches stay dry even in the rain.

The dark brown posts are joined to the roof beams with diagonal braces that form a silhouette resembling the letter Y. The braces stiffen the structure and keep it from swaying. In public places, where children like to hang and climb, a sturdy structure is especially important.

Asphalt shingles are a light, sealed roofing that adapts well to a multi-pitched roof. Looking after it is easy: it is enough to inspect the roof once a year and sweep off the leaves. For a public playground this matters, because maintaining the roof should not take much time or money.

Two-tone railings with cut-outs

What catches the children’s eye most is the railings. They consist of yellowish vertical slats with round openings and shaped cut-outs resembling a keyhole or a drop. Most of the round openings are cut at the joint of two neighboring slats, so each slat has half of a shape. This gives the railings a rhythmic, playful pattern.

In the upper part of the railings there is one more row of smaller cut-outs. Children can look outside through them, and the light falling through the openings draws cheerful shadows on the floor. A detail like this is simple, but children find it very interesting. The cut-outs also make the railings lighter and let the wind blow through, so it never gets stuffy in the gazebo in summer.

The railings are painted in two colors: the slats are yellowish, and the posts and the top rail are dark brown. This contrast makes the gazebo bright and easy to recognize in the playground. The colors can also be chosen differently, for example to match the other equipment in the playground. In the photo, on the right, there is a yellow playhouse with brown trim, and the colors of the gazebo go perfectly with it and make up a unified view of the playground.

The railings run around the gazebo and also serve as backrests for the benches, and above them an open gap is left up to the roof. That way adults can see well from the playground what is happening in the gazebo.

On the right side of the gazebo you can see a bench built in along the railings. It rests on sturdy supports, so it is stable even when several children sit on it. Benches along the railings make use of the interior area and leave the middle free.

Everyday life under the green roof

Gazebos like this suit kindergarten and school yards well, where they are used in many ways. In the morning a short group meeting can take place in it, when the children sit in a circle and discuss the plans for the day. During a walk it becomes a place for quiet games: puzzles, drawing, leafing through books. When it rains, the whole group gathers under the roof and waits for it to pass instead of hurrying indoors.

On a warm day it is convenient to have a snack or a drink of water in the gazebo. On a hot summer afternoon the shade under the roof protects from the scorching sun, which is especially harmful to children. In autumn and spring the gazebo lets you stay outdoors longer even when the weather is changeable.

The gazebo is useful for teachers and parents too. From it the whole playground is easy to see, so you can watch the children playing and at the same time look after a smaller group under the roof. Benches along the railings let you seat all the children at once, and there is room left in the middle for an adult or a toy box.

The gazebo also suits school yards, community playgrounds and the courtyards of apartment buildings, where children play after lessons. It becomes a meeting place where children can be together without being under the open sky.

When planning a gazebo for a playground, it is worth thinking about how it will fit the rhythm of the day. If the group often eats or draws outdoors, a low table will come in handy in the middle. If the gazebo is mainly meant for taking cover from rain and sitting, benches along the railings will be enough, and the middle will stay free for games.

What to consider when building a gazebo for children

Laukbaldis shows only typical examples, so a gazebo can be adapted to a particular institution or yard. Before you call, think about:

  • How many children will be in the gazebo at once. The size of the gazebo and the length of the benches depend on it.
  • The entrance. Which side it will be on and whether it should be wide.
  • Colors. Whether the gazebo should match the other equipment in the playground.
  • The base. In the photo the gazebo stands on concrete slabs; another solution may suit your grounds.
  • A table. Whether you will need a table inside for activities or snacks.

For a children’s gazebo it is especially important that the surfaces are smooth and well maintained. Once a year, inspect the benches, the railings and the edges of the cut-outs. If the wood has become rough or the paint has worn off, it is worth sanding the surface and renewing the coating made for exterior wood. Also check that all fastenings are firm and nothing sticks out.

Remove leaves from the roof, and let the benches dry after rain. In autumn and spring it is worth inspecting the gazebo more carefully, because that is when the wood gets the most moisture. The slabs around the gazebo help keep it clean: children bring in less sand and mud, and wet leaves do not collect at the bottom of the posts.

You will find more examples in the section wooden gazebos. Similar works are the gazebo for children with an enclosed room No. 20, the rectangular gazebo No. 16-10 and the children’s gazebo with a wooden floor and benches No. 20-2. Look for swing sets, sandboxes and playhouses in the section swing sets and sandboxes.
