Log swing set with a shingle roof and curved supports No. 7

Log swing set with a shingle roof and curved supports No. 7

In short: Log swing set No. 7 is a massive yard swing set whose frame is made of thick round logs and, under the roof, is strengthened by naturally curved supports. On top is a gable roof of wooden shingles, and beneath it a bench with a backrest and armrests hangs on braided ropes. The size and finish are agreed with each customer individually.

The log frame up close

The base of this swing set is thick peeled logs. On each side two legs spread forward and back and meet at the top under the roof. The legs are not straight like posts: you can see natural bends and thickenings that remain from the tree growing. Because of this the frame looks powerful and alive at the same time.

The most interesting detail is the curved supports under the roof. On each side a bent log rises from the leg and supports the roof beam. Its curve is not made artificially: the craftsmen choose a naturally bent tree and fit it so that it both holds the structure and decorates it. Supports like these give the swing set a handmade character that cannot be achieved with straight beams.

At the bottom the legs of each side are joined by a log lying on the ground. It keeps the legs from spreading apart and strengthens the whole frame when the bench is swung. The ends of the lying log project slightly beyond the legs, so the base looks firm and finished. Each leg rests on a square wooden footing, which increases the area of support and keeps the end of the log from touching the turf directly.

The logs are sanded and coated with a warm honey shade. Through it you can clearly see the growth rings, the places where branches grew and the natural pattern of the wood. In the sun the logs glow, and against the background of a dark fence their shape stands out especially strongly.

The thickness of the logs has a practical purpose as well. A swinging bench pulls the frame a little forward and back each time, so a light structure could start to sway over time. Massive logs and a wide spread of the legs absorb these forces, so the frame stands calmly while swinging. This is especially important when several people sit on the bench or when children swing harder in their excitement.

The swing set stands on a lawn by a tall dark board fence, behind which you can see trees and a clear sky. On the right side of the photo there is a flower bed edged with stones and a garden lantern. This is the customer yard, but it helps you judge the height of the swing set and how the light logs look against a dark fence.

How a log swing set differs from one made of squared timbers

Wooden swing sets are often made of hewn timbers with a square cross-section. They look tidy but rather strict. Log swing sets are different: they keep the shape of the tree, so in a yard they look more natural and cozy.

The main differences:

  • Appearance. Round logs with natural bends recall a forest and traditional farmsteads, while squared timbers look more like modern architecture.
  • Massiveness. Thick logs give the frame weight, so the swing set stands stably and firmly.
  • Uniqueness. Every log grows in its own way, so even swing sets of the same model differ. This is especially visible in this swing set with curved supports.
  • Harmony with other structures. Log swing sets go naturally with log houses, saunas and gazebos.

Log swing sets especially suit farmsteads, rural tourism homesteads and yards where natural materials predominate. But they can also become a bright accent in the yard of a modern house, where warm wood softens strict lines and dark facade colors.

If the yard already has structures of natural wood, for example a gazebo with trunk columns, a log swing set will become their logical continuation. UAB “Laukbaldis” also makes wooden gazebos, so the structures in the yard can be matched in one style.

The roof and the bench

The gable roof is covered with wooden shingles laid in dense rows. Its edges are finished with bargeboards, and the slopes project slightly beyond the frame. The roof holds back most of the high sun and light rain, so the bench stays dry longer and does not heat up.

The bench is knocked together from slats and coated with a slightly darker shade than the frame. The seat and the backrest are made of horizontal strips, with armrests at the sides. The bench hangs on braided ropes that are fastened at the top to the roof beam and divide into two branches on each side at the bottom. Because of this it hangs level and does not tip even when several people sit on it.

The wide bench with a backrest invites more than children to sit down. It is a place for morning coffee, evening conversations or an afternoon book. Slow swinging under a shingle roof is one of the simplest ways to rest in your own yard.

It is handy to lay outdoor cushions on the bench, and a blanket on a cooler evening. Under the roof they get less damp, but for longer periods it is still better to carry them inside. This also lets the bench dry faster after dew or rain.

A shingle roof and logs are a combination of traditional Lithuanian farmsteads. Unpainted shingles take on a silvery-gray shade over time, while those coated with a protective product keep a warm brown color longer. Which option to choose is worth discussing when you order, with the other structures of your yard in mind.

Spot in the yard: by the fence or in the open

In the photo the swing set is placed near a fence. A spot like this has advantages: a tall fence protects from wind and curious eyes, and the swing set does not interfere with play on the open lawn. Still, enough room must be left between the bench and the fence so that nothing is hit while swinging.

When choosing a spot, it is worth considering:

  • A level base. The logs lying on the ground and the legs must rest evenly, otherwise the frame will lean.
  • A free strip in front of and behind the bench. There should be no flower beds, lanterns or stones in it.
  • The view from the bench. It is nice when the garden, the house or the sunset can be seen from the swing set.
  • Distance to trees. Under trees, more leaves and needles fall on the roof.

In the photo, on the right, you can see a flower bed with stones and a lantern. Accents like these look nice beside a swing set, but they must be set up where the bench does not move. Then the flowers will not be damaged and those sitting will not risk catching their feet.

If children will use the swing set as well, it is handy when it can be seen from the house or the terrace. Small children should always be supervised by adults on a swing set, because a bench with armrests is not a seat made specially for toddlers.

Care and what to discuss when ordering

Massive logs are durable, but outdoors they are affected by sun, rain and frost. Periodically coat the logs and the bench with a protective product made for exterior wood, especially the places closest to the ground. Small lengthwise cracks appear in logs naturally as the wood dries and usually do not harm the strength.

Sweep the shingle roof free of leaves and twigs several times a season. Inspect the ropes in spring and in midsummer, and replace frayed ones immediately. For the winter it is worth taking the bench down and keeping it under a roof.

When you order, discuss how many people will sit on the bench, how much space you have, how massive you want the logs to be and what shade to coat the frame, the bench and the roof with. You can compare with other examples: the swing set with a canopy No. 3, the garden swing set No. 4 and the canopy for a garden swing No. 10. You will find all the products in the section swing sets and sandboxes.

How to order swing set No. 7

UAB “Laukbaldis” has been making wooden products since 1996 and, as the company states, was the first in Lithuania to start making this production. Swing sets, gazebos and other products are made by experienced craftsmen in Dapkiškių village, Tauragės district.

Call +370 687 25388 and quote the product number, No. 7. During the call you will discuss the size, the massiveness of the logs, the roof covering and the shade of the finish. Only typical examples are shown on the website, so all the details are agreed with you before production.

The massiveness of the logs determines not only the appearance but also how the swing set will look in your yard. In a large plot beside a log house thick, strongly curved logs suit, while in a smaller yard a slightly lighter frame does. If you are unsure, tell us about your yard and together you will choose the most suitable solution.

Frequently asked questions

How does a log swing set differ from one made of squared timbers?

A log swing set keeps the natural shape of the tree with its bends and branch marks, so it looks more natural and more massive. A swing set made of squared timbers looks stricter and suits a modern yard better.

What are the curved supports under the roof for?

The curved supports strengthen the frame and hold up the roof beam. At the same time they are a decoration, because their curve is natural and remains from the tree growing.

Are cracks that appear in the logs dangerous?

Small lengthwise cracks appear naturally as the wood dries and usually do not harm the strength. If you notice softened spots, it is worth showing them to a craftsman.

Can this swing set be placed by a fence?

It can, but enough room must be left between the bench and the fence for swinging. A fence protects from wind, but after rain the wood next to it may take longer to dry.

How many people fit on the bench?

The bench is wide and has a backrest and armrests, so several people can sit on it comfortably. Check the exact width and the permitted load when you order, as sizes are agreed individually.
