Treehouse on a tree trunk with a terrace and a ladder for children

In short: The treehouse is a children’s playhouse raised above the ground on a thick tree trunk and diagonal braces. A terrace with crossed railings runs around it, and a wooden ladder with wide steps leads up. The height, size and finish are agreed with each customer individually.

A treehouse you have to climb up to

Many children have dreamed at least once of a house of their own in a tree, a place from which everything can be seen from above and where adults come only when invited. This product turns that dream into a real structure. The playhouse stands not on the ground but on a platform held up by a thick trunk, so even climbing up becomes an adventure.

The platform rests on the trunk in the middle, and its edges are supported by several diagonal braces. They start in the middle of the trunk and spread to the sides like the branches of a tree. This solution distributes the weight of the playhouse and lets the platform be wider than the trunk itself. From a distance it looks as if the house simply grew at the top of the tree. When the surrounding trees turn green in summer, a structure like this blends into the garden even more and becomes a real secret corner for children.

The trunk is left in its natural shape: you can see its thickness, its unevenness and the thickening of the roots near the ground. Beside it the light, neatly planed boards look even warmer, and the whole construction goes with the surrounding trees. The lower part of the platform and the beams are painted a darker shade, so the playhouse looks as if it were built on a firm foundation.

The treehouse was photographed in early spring, in the yard of a farmstead by a body of water. Around it you can see a lawn, trees that have shed their leaves, bushes and an earth path. Because the trees have no leaves yet, the whole construction can be seen clearly: the trunk, the braces, the platform and the playhouse itself.

The look and details of the treehouse

The playhouse itself recalls a small village cottage. The walls are clad with horizontal boards coated with a warm honey shade. In the front wall is a door decorated with a diamond-shaped cut-out, and in the side wall a rectangular window with a frame. Through the window children can watch the yard, and parents can see that all is well inside.

The roof is gabled, covered with wooden shingles and a little darker than the walls. Its edges project far out, so rain does not run straight down the walls and a dry strip remains by the door. Under the eaves you can see the ends of the rafters, which give the roof the features of a traditional building.

A terrace runs around the playhouse. It wraps around the house on several sides, so you can walk round it and look at the yard from different places. The terrace railings consist of posts and boards crossed over each other. They not only decorate but also make a clear border where the platform ends. The same crossed pattern repeats on all sides of the terrace, so the playhouse looks unified and tidy.

A wooden ladder with wide plank steps leads up. It is more comfortable to stand on steps like these than on round rungs, so climbing is easier. The ladder is leaned against the edge of the platform at a gap in the railings, through which you step onto the terrace.

Why children love treehouses

Height changes the game. A playhouse standing on the ground is a home, while a treehouse is a lookout tower, a ship captain’s bridge or a bird-watching spot. From above you can see the whole yard, so children feel as if they were controlling their own little kingdom.

A house like this encourages movement. Climbing the ladder develops coordination and courage, and every climb becomes a small achievement. Children who at first climb carefully soon do it with confidence and are proud of their skills.

A treehouse often becomes a place of peace, too. You can read a book here, look at the clouds or simply be alone. For older children and teenagers this is especially important, so a playhouse like this does not lose its meaning in the yard for a long time.

A treehouse also suits meetings with friends. On the terrace several children can sit together, share snacks or think up a shared game, while inside the playhouse they can set up a secret headquarters with its own rules. Games like these teach children to agree, to share and to look after a common space. Parents are calmer too when the children spend time with friends in their own yard and not somewhere far from home. In the evening, after dark, the playhouse with its terrace becomes a wonderful place to watch the stars or listen to the birds.

Where to put the playhouse and how to use it safely

In the photo the playhouse stands on an open lawn, beside a path, and behind it you can see water and fields. A wide view opens from the platform, so children especially enjoy watching their surroundings from it. When choosing a spot in your own yard, it is worth considering a few things.

First, think about visibility. A raised playhouse can be seen from far away, but it is most convenient when it can be watched through a window of the house or from the terrace. Second, the neighbors: from high up their yards can be seen too, so it is better to turn the window and door toward where the view disturbs nobody.

Third, the surrounding trees. They give shade and coziness, but the branches should not rest against the roof or the railings. On a windy day they could scratch the shingles and the boards, and in autumn more leaves would fall on the roof. Fourth, the distance to water: if your plot has a pond or a stream, it is worth placing the playhouse so that the ladder faces the opposite side.

Safety up high

A raised playhouse needs more attention than one standing on the ground. When discussing the order and choosing the spot, consider a few things:

  • The height of the platform. It is worth matching it to the age of the children. For smaller children a lower platform that is easier to reach is suitable.
  • The position of the ladder. There must be a level, firm base at the bottom so that the ladder does not slip.
  • The surface under the playhouse. Lawn, sand or fine gravel are safer than paving stones or rocks.
  • Free space around. Under the platform and beside the ladder there should be no sharp objects, fence or garden tools.

Children need to be told simple rules: climb one at a time, do not push each other on the terrace and do not climb over the railings. Small children climbing into the playhouse must always be supervised by adults. It is handy for parents when the playhouse can be seen from the house or the terrace.

Care and what to discuss when ordering

Every spring inspect the whole construction: whether the joints of the diagonal braces are firm, whether the platform has leaned and whether the railings and the ladder steps are holding well. If you notice a loosened joint, fix it before letting the children up. Sweep leaves and twigs off the shingle roof so that moisture does not linger on it.

Periodically coat the walls, the terrace and the ladder with a protective product made for exterior wood. Look especially carefully at the terrace boards and the ladder steps, as they are touched most and stay damp longer. Small cracks appear in wood naturally, but the surfaces children climb and walk on must stay smooth.

When you order, discuss:

  • what height of platform you want and how old the children who will use it are;
  • the size of the playhouse and the terrace, and the position of the door and window;
  • whether the playhouse will be built on an existing tree or on a separate trunk;
  • what shade of finish will go with the other structures in your yard.

If you are unsure about the height, compare with examples that stand on the ground: the wooden playhouse for children with a terrace and the children’s playhouse with an open entrance. The children’s play complex with swings would also go well next to it. You will find all the products in the section swing sets, sandboxes and children’s playhouses, and for the relaxation of adults the wooden gazebos will suit.
