Children’s play area with canopies, a sandbox and a slide No. 9

Children’s play area with canopies, a sandbox and a slide No. 9

In short: Children’s play area No. 9 is a large log structure that joins a tower with a wavy slide and a sandbox underneath, a swing set with a wide bench and a metal crossbar fixed to a carved post. The tower and the swing set are covered by two separate gable shingle roofs. The composition, size and finish are agreed individually.

What kind of children’s play area this is

This is one of the largest examples in this category. It holds so many activities that children do not need another play spot: they can swing, climb, slide, play in the sand and hang from a crossbar. All the parts are joined into one structure, so the area takes up less space than several separate pieces of equipment.

On the left stands a tower with a platform. It is held up by legs of thick logs, strengthened by diagonal braces joined crosswise. Children climb to the platform on crosswise rungs made of small logs, and a long wavy slide runs down from it. The waves make sliding more fun: the child rises and drops lightly several times before reaching the ground.

A wooden sandbox is set up under the platform of the tower. This is a very practical solution: the platform above it casts shade, so the sand heats up less on a hot day and the smallest children can play in the shade. The edge of the box is decorated with a naturally curved branch.

A sandbox under the tower is especially handy for small children. They play almost under a roof, while older brothers or sisters can climb to the platform and slide. This way everyone stays in one place, and it is easier for the parents to supervise them.

On the right, under the larger roof, hangs the bench of the swing set with a backrest and armrests. It hangs on light-colored ropes. At the bottom of one leg of the swing set a curved log is fixed, which strengthens the frame and recalls a tree root.

The roofs and the carved post

Both roofs are gabled and covered with wooden shingles. Their front edges are decorated with carved bargeboards, and the ends of beams can be seen under the roofs. Two roofs of different heights create the impression of a small village and give the area coziness. They also shelter the bench and the tower platform from the high sun and light rain.

To the right of the swing set stands a tall post with a pointed, carved top. A metal crossbar is fixed between it and the frame of the swing set. Older children can hang from it, pull themselves up or turn somersaults, and the post at the same time becomes a decoration of the area.

What the photo shows

The table helps you quickly see what parts this typical example consists of.

The area stands in a yard, on a lawn by a board fence and a brick wall. Beyond the fence you can see fields and a strip of forest. On the right, behind the post, stands another, metal garden swing set, which is not part of this product.

At the foot of the post you can see a few boards, and around the area the grass has not yet recovered after the installation work. A few weeks later the lawn around a children’s play area like this usually turns green again, and the surroundings look tidy.

Who such a play area suits

A large area with several play zones especially suits families with several children of different ages. The smallest play in the sandbox, the middle ones slide and climb the tower, and the oldest hang from the crossbar. The swing set bench suits everyone, even parents, who can sit down and watch the children play.

When the children grow up, the area does not lose its meaning. The crossbar suits teenagers too, and the swing bench under a roof becomes a place for evening rest. Over time the sandbox can be turned into a flower bed or simply covered and used as a low platform.

An area like this also suits yards that often receive guests with children. When a larger group plays at the same time, everyone finds an activity and nobody has to wait long for a turn.

Different activities develop different skills:

  • the sandbox: fine motor skills, imagination and patience;
  • climbing the tower: coordination and courage;
  • the slide and the swing set: the sense of balance;
  • the crossbar: strength of the arms and shoulders.

When all these activities are gathered in one place, the children’s play area becomes a real center of the yard. Children spend more time in the fresh air here, invent shared games and learn to share. Parents do not have to look every day for somewhere to take the children to play.

A play area as a decoration of the yard

Many pieces of play equipment look like a temporary solution in a yard: bright plastic, metal and standard shapes. This area is different: it is built of logs, covered with shingles and decorated with carved bargeboards, so it recalls the traditional buildings of Lithuanian farmsteads. It does not have to be hidden in a corner of the yard but can stand in a visible place. The carved bargeboards and roofs of different heights give the area a rhythm, so it looks nice from any side of the yard.

The photo shows how well the warm-toned logs go with the red brick wall and the brown board fence. In the same way the area would suit a log house, a wooden gazebo or a sauna. If the yard already has structures of natural wood, it is worth choosing the shade of the finish of the area to match them.

The only more striking detail is the dark wavy slide. It stands out from the wooden structure, but at the same time shows that different materials are combined in the area where function requires it. The color and type of the slide can be discussed when you order.

Spot in the yard and safety

The area is long and wide, because the slide projects to one side and the crossbar with the post to the other. When planning the spot, consider this whole area and the space around it:

  • at the end of the slide there must be room to stand up and step away;
  • in front of and behind the swing set bench there must be a free strip;
  • under the crossbar there must be no stones, paving stones or other hard objects;
  • the base must be level so that the whole structure stands straight.

In the photo the area is set near the fence but not right against it: free room is left between the swing set and the fence. Around the sandbox and under the crossbar, lawn, sand or fine gravel suit best.

It is worth explaining a few rules to children: do not run in front of a swinging bench, do not climb up the slide, and do not hang from the crossbar when others are playing beneath it. The smallest children must always be supervised by adults.

It is handy when the area can be seen from the house. In the photo it stands in an open part of the yard, so it is easy to see from various places. If your plot has a slope, put the area on the most level spot or level the base in advance.

Care and order details

In spring inspect the ropes, the fastening of the crossbar and the ladder of the tower. Replace frayed ropes immediately. Wipe the surface of the slide free of sand and leaves, and the shingle roofs free of fallen twigs. When nobody is playing in the sandbox, it is worth covering it, and in spring the sand should be dug over and topped up if needed.

Periodically coat the logs with a protective product made for exterior wood. Look more carefully at the sandbox boards and the ends of the logs near the ground, as they stay damp the longest. For the winter it is worth taking the swing set bench down and keeping it under a roof.

Once a season, check that the crossbar is firmly held at both ends and that its surface is undamaged. The top of the carved post and other small carvings are worth coating with a protective product together with the logs, because moisture lingers longer on them.

When you order, discuss which parts you need, how old the children who will play are and how much space you have. You can also choose a simpler option, for example without the crossbar or without the sandbox. You can compare with the swing set with a slide and two canopies No. 2, the wooden play area No. 8 or the children’s play complex No. 6. You will find all the examples in the section swing sets and sandboxes for children.
