Natural wood furniture “Heavy” with trunk chairs No. 5

Natural wood furniture “Heavy” with trunk chairs No. 5

In short: “Heavy” No. 5 is natural wood furniture made of solid oak: a table with a live-edge top on branching trunk legs, three chairs carved from a trunk and two benches with backrests. Every part of the set keeps the shape of the tree, so the furniture looks as if it grew in that spot. The composition, size and finish are agreed individually with each customer.

Natural wood furniture under a roof

In the photo the set stands under a roof, on a pavement of irregular stone slabs. On the left and right you can see the wooden supports that hold up the roof, and behind them an autumn garden. Yellow leaves are scattered on the lawn, and farther off you can see a rock garden with shrubs and the frame of a children’s swing set with a small ladder.

It is a very favorable place for furniture. The roof protects from rain and scorching sun, so the finish stays undamaged longer and the wood gets less damp. From the table you can see the whole garden and the children’s play area.

The table. The tabletop is made of a thick slab of wood with a natural, wavy edge. Its shape is irregular: wider in one place and narrower in another, with the edges rounded and sanded. The tabletop is held up not by straight legs but by branching trunks, whose limbs spread out to the sides and rest on the floor like the roots of a tree. That is why the table looks like a single sculpture.

Through the honey-colored coating the rings and the bends of the trunk are clearly visible. Each limb has its own direction and thickness, so even tables of the same model are never alike.

The surface of the tabletop is sanded smooth, so it is convenient for putting dishes on, while the edges stay lively and interesting. Under the edge of the tabletop you can see the round shape of the trunk, from which it is easy to tell that the slab was cut from thick wood. A tabletop like this has no gaps between planks, so crumbs and leaves do not get stuck in cracks, and the surface is easy to wipe in a single movement.

Chairs carved from a trunk

What catches the eye most are the three chairs: two stand side by side behind the table, and the third at the front right. They are made of a single trunk: the seat is hollowed out inside, and the back part is left taller and becomes the backrest. The chairs have no legs, and they rest on the floor with the whole base of the trunk.

A chair like this is very stable. It does not tip, it does not wobble, and it has no joints that could work loose over time. The hollowed seat wraps around the sitter from the sides, so both children and adults feel cozy and secure in it.

The outside of the trunk chair is left round, and its edges are sanded. From the side you can clearly see the rings of the wood and the natural shape of the trunk. It is an object you want to touch: smooth, warm and every time different.

One thing worth knowing: because the seat is concave, water may collect in it outdoors after rain. Under a roof, as in the photo, this is not a problem, and in an open place it is enough to wipe the seat after rain.

A trunk chair is heavy, so it is not worth moving often. It is best to decide right away where it will stand and leave it there. If you do have to move the chair, it is better to lift it with two people than to drag it across the floor, so that you scratch neither the stone slabs nor the wood.

Two different benches

Two benches also stand by the table. The right one has a backrest made of a wide plank fixed to supports of round logs. The left bench is more massive: its seat lies on a thick block, and a round log is fitted at the side as an armrest. Both benches are meant for several people, so together with the chairs a fair-sized group can sit at the table.

The combination of benches and chairs is convenient because everyone can choose how to sit. Some prefer to sit in a deep trunk chair, others on a bench, where it is easier to sit down and stand up. If you prefer only chairs or only benches, the composition of the set can be changed when you order.

The backrests of the benches are made on the same principle: as little processing as possible and as much of the shape of the wood as possible. The plank on the right bench is left wide and massive, and the backrest is held by two round log posts. The log armrest of the left bench is convenient to lean on when you want to sit sideways to the table and look at the garden. The seats of the benches are wide, so you can sit on them longer without cushions.

Metal partsNot visible

All the furniture is coated with the same warm shade. Because of that, items of different shapes (a slab, trunks, blocks and planks) merge into one set.

No metal parts can be seen in the photo: the trunks, slabs and logs are joined so that only wood catches the eye. This is one more reason why such furniture looks natural and suits other wooden structures in the yard.

Who this carved outdoor furniture suits

Natural wood furniture suits best where a cozy, rustic or even fairy-tale mood is wanted. It goes well with farmsteads, log cabins, saunas and gazebos that use natural trunks. Such furniture becomes not only a place to eat but also an accent of the yard that every guest notices.

In the photo the furniture stands under a roof, and a children’s swing set can be seen nearby. That is a good idea for a family: the parents sit at the table in the shade while the children play within sight. If you are also thinking about a play area for children, look at the section swing sets and sandboxes for children.

Because the furniture is heavy, it needs a firm, level base. Stone slabs, paving blocks or a wooden terrace floor work best. On soft ground the trunk legs and the bases of the chairs may sink in, so it is worth putting slabs under them.

Such furniture also suits rural tourism homesteads and rest areas, where guests like to take photos with unusual objects. A trunk chair or a table on branching legs becomes a place that people remember and talk about. In addition, the wind does not carry off such heavy furniture, and its sturdiness lets you seat both children and older people with confidence.

How to look after natural wood furniture

Furniture standing under a roof needs less care, but you will not manage without it entirely. A few simple tips will help the furniture stay beautiful for a long time:

  • In spring wipe off dust and cobwebs, especially between the limbs of the trunks and in the hollows of the chairs.
  • Once a season, coat the surfaces with an oil made for exterior wood. It is most convenient to apply it to the limbs and concave places with a brush.
  • Keep an eye on the base of the trunks and chairs. If the floor under the roof is damp, it is worth lifting or moving the furniture a little from time to time so that the base dries out.
  • Small cracks in thick wood are natural. There is no need to be afraid of them: it is enough to clean them and coat them with oil together with the whole surface.

If the furniture stands in an open yard, it will need care a little more often, and in winter it is better to cover it with a breathable cover. A tight plastic film is not suitable, because moisture builds up under it. In spring, remove the cover on a dry day and let the furniture air out well.

How to order set No. 5

UAB “Laukbaldis” has made wooden products since 1996 and, as the company states, was the first in Lithuania to start making this production. The furniture is made of solid oak by experienced craftsmen, and the limbs, knots and natural curves of the wood make every product one of a kind.

Call +370 687 25388 and quote No. 5. Together you will agree on how many chairs and benches you need, how large the table should be and what finish you like. Because every trunk chair and every tabletop is cut from a different tree, your set will inevitably differ a little from the one in the photo. The website shows only typical examples.

Before you call, think about where the furniture will stand. If it will be under a roof, as in the photo, measure the space between the supports and leave enough room to walk around the table. If the set will stand in an open yard, it is worth discussing which finish will best protect the wood from sun and rain.

You will find more similar works too: the massive outdoor furniture with a live-edge table No. 4, the wooden trunk armchair No. 13 and the carved outdoor table “Star” No. 12. You will see the whole range in the section garden and outdoor furniture.

Frequently asked questions

What are the chairs of this set made of?

The chairs are hollowed out of a single oak trunk. They have no legs or joints, so they are very stable.

Is it comfortable to sit in trunk chairs?

The concave seat wraps around the sitter from the sides, and the taller back part becomes the backrest. If you sit for a long time, you can lay a cushion on it.

Can I order more trunk chairs instead of benches?

Yes, the composition of the set is agreed individually. You can choose only chairs, only benches or a combination of them.

Can natural wood furniture be kept in an open yard?

Yes, but then it needs oil care more often, and after rain you should wipe the water out of the concave chair seats. Under a roof the furniture keeps its good finish longer.

Why are the table legs branching?

The table is held up by natural trunks with limbs that spread out like roots. Such legs rest widely on the base and give the table a distinctive look.

How do I order natural wood furniture No. 5?

Call us and quote No. 5. We will agree on the composition of the set, the table size and the finish.
