Timber-frame gazebo with diamond-shaped windows and benches No. 17

Timber-frame gazebo with diamond-shaped windows and benches No. 17

In short: Timber-frame gazebo No. 17 is a wooden gazebo with a sturdy frame whose three walls are clad with horizontal boards and whose front is left open. The walls have diamond-shaped windows, there are railings with an X pattern on both sides of the entrance, and inside, benches run along the walls with a table standing by them. The size, finishing and equipment are agreed separately with the customer.

A timber-frame gazebo: between a cabin and a gazebo

A timber-frame gazebo is built differently from gazebos with natural trunks. First a wooden frame of posts and beams is made, and then it is clad with boards. This produces smooth, closed walls that protect from wind and prying eyes. In this gazebo three sides are clad, so it resembles a small garden cabin without a front wall.

This solution combines the advantages of two kinds of structures. Like a cabin, the gazebo gives coziness and protection: it is calm inside even on a windy day, and in the evening the walls hold the warmth. Like a gazebo, it stays open to the yard, so it is bright inside, there is no lack of fresh air, and the garden can be seen from within.

A timber-frame gazebo is easy to adapt to different needs. One customer needs more windows, another one fully open side, a third benches along only one wall. Because the structure is made of straight elements, such changes are easy to plan before it is made.

The frame construction is tidy and regular. The walls are smooth and the corners are straight, so the gazebo goes well with more modern houses, wooden summerhouses or garden cabins. In the photo another wooden building can be seen on the right, and the gazebo forms a unified ensemble in the yard with it. If you plan several wooden structures, it is worth thinking straight away about how they will look together and in what colors they will be painted.

Walls of horizontal boards and diamond-shaped windows

The walls are clad with horizontal boards laid tightly one above another. They are painted a warm amber shade, and the posts and beams of the frame a darker brown. This contrast brings out the structure: you can see right away where the posts stand and how they join the roof.

From inside you can see the open roof structure, with rafters and beams painted a darker color. There is no ceiling, so the gazebo looks taller and more spacious, and the wood under the roof is well ventilated. The roof projects widely beyond the front wall, so the entrance stays under the roof even in the rain.

The most memorable detail of this gazebo is the diamond-shaped windows. Two such windows are set in the back wall and one more in the right side wall. Their frames are dark, so the diamonds stand out clearly against the light boards. Through the windows you can see greenery, and extra light comes inside.

The windows are not only practical but also decorative. The diamond shape gives the gazebo a playful look and recalls the old decorative traditions of country buildings. Without them the closed walls would look monotonous, and with them the gazebo acquires a face of its own.

It is worth discussing the position and number of windows when you order. If there is a beautiful view behind the gazebo, more windows can be made, and if the wall faces the neighbors’ plot, fewer. The diamond shape can be replaced with another, for example round or rectangular, but it is the diamonds that give this gazebo its recognizable character.

An open front with X-pattern railings

The front of the gazebo is open. It is framed by two posts joined to the roof beam with diagonal braces that form a silhouette resembling the letter Y. On both sides of the entrance there are low railings with an X pattern. They mark the boundary of the gazebo and give a sense of safety, but do not block the view.

The X pattern is a traditional motif of country fences and gates. Here it repeats both in the railings and in the braces under the roof, so the whole front looks harmonious. The diagonal boards also stiffen the structure. The top of the railings is covered with a wide board on which you can put a cup or a small flower pot.

A wide entrance is left between the railings. It is convenient for carrying in dishes or extra chairs, and from inside you can see the whole yard. In summer the open side lets the wind ventilate the gazebo, so it never gets stuffy.

Benches along the walls and light furniture

Inside, long benches run along the back and side walls, forming the letter L. This is a very practical solution: the benches do not take up the middle, and there are plenty of seats. A table stands by the benches, and opposite it there is one more separate bench. The furniture is light, painted almost white, so it stands out nicely against the darker walls.

Benches along the walls have another advantage: the walls become a support for the back. It is comfortable to sit for a long time, and in the evening, when it cools down, the walls shield your back from the wind. You can put cushions on the benches, and they will get much less wet than in an open gazebo. In a gazebo like this it is pleasant both to have a meal and to simply sit with a book.

UAB “Laukbaldis” makes oak outdoor furniture, so the table and benches can be chosen to fit the size of the gazebo. The color of the furniture can also be matched to the finish of the gazebo.

The floor of the gazebo is wooden, made of boards, raised above the ground on a frame. It is warm and level, so the furniture stands firmly. Because three sides are closed, less rain and fewer leaves get onto the floor, so it stays clean and dry longer.

Who a timber-frame gazebo suits

A timber-frame gazebo with three walls suits best those who want more privacy and protection from the wind, but do not want a fully enclosed room. It comes in handy:

  • on garden plots where the neighbors’ houses stand close and you want some separation;
  • in windy places where an open gazebo would be uncomfortable;
  • in yards with a summerhouse or garden cabin that call for a matching structure;
  • for families who sit outdoors for a long time in the evenings and value warmth.

In the photo the gazebo stands in a garden among an apple tree with a whitewashed trunk, a spruce and flowers. In front you can see a planter with hostas, and on the right the corner of another wooden building. The gazebo looks like a natural part of the garden: it does not try to dominate, but creates a cozy corner where it is pleasant to spend time.

A gazebo like this is useful in spring and autumn as well. When it is still cool outside, the three walls hold back the wind, while the open side, facing south or west, lets the sun in. This way the season in the gazebo starts earlier and ends later than in an open gazebo.

In winter a timber-frame gazebo can also serve as storage for garden furniture. The walls protect the furniture from the snow that the wind would blow into an open gazebo.

Ordering and care

Laukbaldis shows only typical examples, so before you call, think about:

  • Which walls will be closed. It is worth turning the open side toward the garden and the closed ones toward the wind or the neighbors.
  • Windows. How many you need and in which wall.
  • Benches along the walls. Whether you want built-in benches or separate furniture.
  • Colors. The shades of the walls, the frame and the furniture.

Moisture and sun do the most harm to wood outdoors. Once a year, inspect the lowest wall boards and the edge of the floor, where water stays the longest. If the paint has worn off or the wood has started to absorb moisture, renew the protective coating. It is also worth checking the window frames to see whether water gets into the corners. Remove leaves from the roof, especially if the gazebo stands under fruit trees, as in the photo, and in autumn clean the floor so that wet leaves do not stay against the bottom of the walls.

You will find more examples in the section wooden gazebos. Compare it with the gazebo with a gable roof and X-pattern railings No. 16-4, the wooden windbreak No. 15-8 and the open gazebo with windows No. 25-37. Examples of garden cabins and summerhouses are in the section saunas and summerhouses.

UAB “Laukbaldis” has made wooden products since 1996 and, as the company states, was the first in Lithuania to start making this production. Call +370 687 25388 and quote No. 17. During the conversation you will agree on the size, the arrangement of the walls and windows, the finish and the furniture. If you have photos of your garden or a plan, prepare them in advance.

The website shows only typical examples, so feel free to ask about changes: more windows, a different wall color, a wider entrance or other benches. The gazebo is made according to the agreed solutions, so it will fit your yard and not just the photo.
