Gazebo bar: a wooden outdoor bar with a shingle roof and chairs

Gazebo bar: a wooden outdoor bar with a shingle roof and chairs

In short: Gazebo bar is an outdoor bar under a hip shingle roof, with a continuous counter of live-edge boards in the middle and tall bar chairs made of natural branches arranged around it. The roof is held up by thick peeled trunks. The size, the shape of the counter and the number of chairs are agreed with the customer individually.

An outdoor bar instead of an ordinary gazebo

Most gazebos are built to have a table and benches inside. This work is different: under the roof stands not a table but a bar. Its counter forms a closed rectangle, so inside there is room for the person pouring drinks or preparing snacks, while guests sit around on tall chairs. It is a completely different mood from an ordinary table, more like a country tavern or a summer cafe.

The photo was taken in autumn, apparently in the yard of a cafe or restaurant. Leaves have fallen on the paving, behind the bar you can see a red brick building with a red awning, a lamp on a post and garden plants. More of the same chairs stand beside the bar. The whole setting shows that a bar like this suits a spot near a catering business, a holiday homestead or an events space.

But an outdoor bar can also stand in a private yard. On a large homestead where celebrations are often held, it becomes the center of attraction: guests gather at the bar, and the host stays with them all evening instead of running back and forth to the house.

People socialize differently at a bar than at a table. It is easier to walk up, sit for a moment, exchange a few words and move on. That is why an outdoor bar especially suits events where guests move around the yard: weddings at a homestead, birthdays, corporate parties or summer concerts.

A counter of live-edge boards

The sides of the bar are built of vertical boards whose edges are left natural. Each board has a slightly different width and bend, so the surface looks alive and handmade. Light wood with a distinct grain looks especially beautiful on a sunny autumn day.

On top, the counter is covered by a wide countertop that projects slightly outward. It is handy to put a glass or a plate on it, or to rest your elbows. The countertop runs around the whole bar, so chairs can be placed on all four sides. On the right side a small metal handle can be seen, so it looks as if there are doors that open in the counter.

On the inner side of the bar there is room for shelves, dishes or crates of drinks. How to arrange this part is worth discussing when you order: how many shelves will be needed, whether there will be room for a cooling box, where the trash bin will stand and how it will be most convenient to get inside.

The height of the countertop matters more for a bar than for an ordinary table. It has to match the height of the chairs, so that those sitting can reach their glass comfortably and rest their feet on a crossbar. So it is best to order the bar and the chairs together: then their dimensions are matched at once.

Trunk columns and a shingle roof

The hip roof is held up by thick peeled trunks. Their surface is sanded, and the natural bends and knots are kept. Some trunks lean or curve slightly, so the whole structure looks as if it had grown out of the garden itself. The columns are set into the corners of the counter, so the bar and the roof form one sturdy structure.

The roof is covered with wooden shingles. Over time they have darkened and taken on a brownish gray shade, and the edges stand out nicely. The ridges and edges are covered with wider boards that protect the roof joints from rain. The roof projects widely beyond the counter, so those sitting on the chairs are under the roof even when it rains.

Under the roof you can see beams and rafters. It is easy to fix a string of lamps or a few lanterns to them, and in the evening the bar then looks even cozier. UAB “Laukbaldis” also makes wooden lamps, so the lighting can be discussed together.

A shingle roof suits a bar not only for its looks. Wood under the roof does not hold as much heat as a metal covering, so it is cooler under it on a sunny day. In addition, rain does not drum on shingles as loudly as on sheet metal. Laukbaldis makes shingles for roofs, so this covering can be ordered together with the whole bar.

Bar chairs made of branches

No less interesting than the bar itself are the tall chairs. They are made from natural, peeled branches and trunk offcuts: the legs are slightly curved, the crossbars are fixed at different heights, and the seats are made of thick pieces of wood. Some chairs have backrests, others are plain tall stools. The lower crossbars serve as footrests.

Since every branch is different, no chair is exactly the same as another. It is the same principle on which all Laukbaldis products are based: branches, twigs and the natural curve of the wood make every item unique. The furniture of the company is made of solid oak by experienced craftsmen.

Chairs of branches are heavy and stable, so the wind will not knock them over, and they do not wobble when you climb onto a tall seat. On the other hand, they are not so easy to move, so it is worth thinking in advance where they will stand and where they will be kept in winter. If the bar needs more seats only for celebrations, extra chairs can be stored in a shed and taken out only when needed.

What the photo shows

A short summary will help you quickly understand what makes up this outdoor bar. All the details are given according to the photo, and the final look of your bar will depend on the agreed solutions. For example, a wooden floor is not in the photo, but it can be added if the bar will stand on a lawn.

What to discuss when ordering an outdoor bar

Laukbaldis shows only typical examples, so an outdoor bar can be adapted to your place and needs. Before calling, think about:

  • How many people will sit at the bar. The length of the counter and the number of chairs depend on it.
  • Whether you need a closed rectangle. The bar can also be made with one or two sides, set against a wall.
  • The fitting out of the inside. Shelves, drawers, room for dishes and drinks.
  • The base. In the photo the bar stands on paving; elsewhere a different base may be needed.
  • Lighting. If you will use the bar in the evenings, it is worth planning the lamps in advance.

It is important to think about the spot, too. It is better to put an outdoor bar where the kitchen or the entrance to the house is nearby, because dishes, ice or snacks often have to be carried to the bar. If the bar will stand farther away, it is worth planning more room for supplies inside the counter. Also think about which side the sun sets: the evening sun shining straight into the eyes of those sitting at the bar can spoil the mood quite a lot.

If you plan to connect electricity to the bar, for example for lighting or a refrigerator, discuss the place of the cable before construction. Then the wires can be hidden in the structure and will not be visible.

Moisture and the sun do the most harm to an outdoor bar. Clean the countertop, on which dishes are put and drinks are spilled, more often, and renew the protective coating regularly. Inspect the bottoms of the chair legs in spring, and in autumn, before winter, it is worth carrying the chairs under a roof or into storage. Remove leaves from the roof so that the shingles dry faster.

You will find other gazebo examples in the section wooden gazebos. Made in a similar style are the gazebo with a shingle roof No. 26-1, the rustic gazebo No. 25-11 and the windbreak shelter with a wavy roof No. 15-5. Look for outdoor tables and benches in the section oak garden and outdoor furniture.

Frequently asked questions

Are the bar chairs included in the order?

In the photo tall chairs made of branches stand around the bar, but their number and shape are agreed separately. You can order chairs with backrests or plain stools.

Does an outdoor bar have to have four sides?

No, the shape of the counter is agreed individually. The bar can be made with one or two sides, for example set against the wall of a building.

Is such a bar suitable for a private yard?

It is, especially for homesteads where celebrations are often held. In a smaller yard the bar can be shorter, with fewer chairs.

How do I look after the countertop?

Clean the countertop more often than other parts, because dishes are put on it and drinks are spilled. Renew the protective coating made for exterior wood regularly.

Can shelves be built inside the bar?
