Carport with a storage shed, terrace and sliding glass No. 8

Carport with a storage shed, terrace and sliding glass No. 8

In short: Carport with a storage shed No. 8 is a large wooden structure under one hip roof that combines three parts: an open car bay, an enclosed storage shed with brown double doors and a terrace with sliding glass. A single building provides room for a car, belongings and relaxing. The size, finishing and equipment are agreed with each customer individually.

Three purposes in one structure

In the photo the structure stands beside a wide paved yard on a sunny spring day. A large hip roof covered with dark bitumen shingles covers the whole building. Gutters run along the edge of the roof, so rainwater is led away neatly and does not run onto the entrances.

On the left is an open carport bay. It is held up by thick wooden posts, and on the corner post you can see boards crossed diagonally to form an X pattern. Under the roof there is a space that a car can drive into or a trailer can be parked in. Through the open side you can see a lawn, bushes and the neighbors’ farmstead. The crossed boards at the bottom of the post not only decorate but also reinforce the corner, so the edge of the carport looks finished.

In the middle stands the enclosed storage shed. Its walls are clad with horizontal boards, and in the front there are brown double doors with a handle and a lock. In the side wall facing the carport you can see a long solid wooden wall, which separates the car space from the terrace and blocks the wind.

On the right is a covered terrace with a wooden floor. Its front is held up by a column with diagonal braces, and the sides are glazed with sliding glass. Through the glass you can see that the terrace is linked with the lawn and the garden, so it is pleasant to sit in and watch the yard. It faces the green part of the plot and not the driveway, so cars do not disturb relaxing.

All the wood is coated in a warm, reddish-amber shade. The brown doors and the dark roof go with it, so the structure looks unified even though it joins three very different parts. From the yard side it resembles a large gazebo and not a utility building.

A carport with a storage shed and a terrace: why it is convenient

A yard often needs several structures: a place for a car, a shed for tools and a gazebo for relaxing. If each is built separately, the plot quickly fills up with different roofs and different styles. When all three purposes are joined under one roof, the yard looks tidier and the building more substantial.

A solution like this has practical advantages too:

  • Short distances. It is easy to unload shopping or belongings from the car straight into the storage shed, and to carry garden furniture cushions from the storage shed to the terrace.
  • One foundation and one roof. You only need to prepare one spot, and the roof and gutters are looked after together.
  • Protection from the wind. The enclosed storage shed in the middle works as a windbreak: it separates the terrace from the carport and holds back the wind from one side.
  • Use all year round. Sliding glass lets you use the terrace on cooler days too, and the carport protects the car in winter.

A carport with a storage shed especially suits a yard where the house has no garage but the owners also want a place to relax outdoors. One structure solves several questions at once.

How the different parts are arranged matters too. The storage shed in the middle works as a dividing wall: noise, exhaust fumes and dirt from the wheels stay on the car side, while the terrace side remains a quiet relaxation space. If the car bay and the terrace were side by side without a partition, people relaxing would have to breathe dust every time someone arrives or leaves.

A storage shed with double doors

The doors of the storage shed are double, so when both leaves are opened a wide opening appears. It is easy to bring in a lawn mower, wheel in bicycles, garden furniture or bigger equipment. Day to day it is enough to open one leaf, and the other only when you need to bring in something wide, such as a garden table or a folded trampoline.

The doors are brown, with a handle and a lock, so the storage shed can be locked. The brown color stands out softly against the warm wood and goes with the dark roof. The doors are in the wall facing the yard, so it is convenient to drive up to them by car and unload heavier things such as tires, fertilizer sacks or building materials.

In front of the doors and the terrace there is a low wooden step that runs along the whole facade. It joins the entrance of the storage shed and the terrace floor into one line and lets you step up comfortably from the paving.

Inside, the storage shed can be fitted out according to what you will keep in it. Shelves and hooks for tools are easy to fix to the wooden walls, and a free space can be left by the door for bicycles or a lawn mower. If terrace furniture will also be stored in the storage shed for winter, it is worth planning more floor area.

A terrace with sliding glass

The terrace part has sliding glass without massive frames. When closed, it holds off wind and slanting rain, and when open it turns the terrace into an open gazebo. This flexibility lets you use the terrace from early spring to late autumn. On a hot summer day the glass can be slid aside to let a draft cool the terrace, and in the evening, when it gets cold, closed again.

The wooden terrace floor is raised above the paving, so it is protected from the water that runs over the paving stones when it rains. Through the glass a view of the lawn and the garden opens up, so sitting inside you feel a connection with your surroundings and not enclosure.

On the terrace you can put a table with chairs, relaxation furniture or even set up a summer kitchen. What goes on the terrace is your decision, and Laukbaldis also makes oak garden furniture that will suit such a space.

The glass is not installed on all sides of the terrace: the front part remains open between the columns. This way the terrace keeps the character of a gazebo: you can step onto it straight from the yard, while the glass walls protect from the wind from the side. The extent of the glazing can be chosen according to the side from which the wind most often blows on your plot.

What to discuss when ordering

Laukbaldis shows only typical examples, so the size of each part is agreed separately. Before calling, think about how many cars should fit under the carport, what size of storage shed you need and whether the terrace will be used only in summer or for longer. Also discuss the extent of the glazing, the color of the doors and the place in the yard.

  • The carport. Will it hold one car, or a trailer, a motorcycle or garden machinery as well.
  • The storage shed. Will one room be enough, or will you need two, for example a separate one for firewood.
  • The terrace. How many people will usually sit at the table and whether the terrace will need electricity for lighting.
  • The foundation. In the photo the structure stands beside a paved pad, and the terrace floor is raised above it.

The same structure from another angle is shown by the glazed gazebo with a storage shed. You will find similar solutions in our other works too: the gazebo with a storage shed and a terrace in a pine forest No. 7 and the carport with a storage shed No. 1. You will find all the examples in the section wooden storage sheds, garages and shelters, and glazed gazebos among the wooden gazebos.

Care and ordering

Every spring inspect the coating of the wood, especially the south wall, the bottoms of the posts and the edges of the terrace floor. Recoat the pale places with a product meant for exterior wood. Clean the tracks of the sliding glass of sand and leaves, and the gutters in autumn when the leaves have fallen.

It is worth inspecting the bottoms of the carport posts more closely, because that is where water splashed by the wheels and snow pushed aside in winter collect. Push snow cleared from the paving away from the posts and from the edge of the terrace floor. Wash the glass with ordinary window cleaning products, and after rainy days slide it open so that the terrace dries faster. Oil the hinges and the lock of the storage shed doors now and then so that they open easily in a cold winter too.
