Natural-wood gazebo with forked trunks No. 16-1

Natural-wood gazebo with forked trunks No. 16-1

In short: Natural-wood gazebo No. 16-1 is an open four-sided gazebo whose shingle roof is held up by curved, forked trunks. One side is closed by a low wall of wide boards, the others by a low fence of knotty branches, and the wooden floor is raised above the ground on concrete blocks. The size, finishing and equipment are agreed with each customer individually.

A natural-wood gazebo among pines and boulders

The photo was taken on a sunny summer day in a spacious yard by a forest. In the background tall pines and birches grow, a huge granite boulder lies on the left, an upright stone stands on the right, and garden furniture is set out on the lawn. Among these natural forms the gazebo looks entirely at home, as if it had grown here together with the trees.

That is the essence of a natural-wood gazebo. It does not try to look like a strict architectural object. Curved trunks, a branch low fence and a wooden roof go with the landscape of forest and stones, so the gazebo becomes part of its surroundings and not a contrast to them.

Since the gazebo stands on an open lawn, it can be seen from all sides. From afar the warm honey shade and the dark roof ridges stand out, and from closer the curves of every trunk. It becomes the accent of the yard that draws the eye when you step out of the house. The garden furniture standing on the lawn next to it shows that life here takes place outdoors, and the gazebo is its center.

Forked trunks instead of straight posts

The most striking feature of this gazebo is the columns. They are not hewn beams but natural trunks with all their bends. The front trunk is curved at the bottom and divides in two at the top, which embrace the roof beam like arms. In another corner a trunk bends in an arc, and diagonal branch braces are set between the columns and the beams.

The trunks are peeled and sanded, so their surface is smooth, but the form remains wild. Knots and branch spots can clearly be seen on them, and it is they that give the gazebo life. Natural trunks are different every time, so there are no two absolutely identical gazebos like this. That is not a flaw but, on the contrary, the reason why people who value handwork and one-of-a-kind things choose such a gazebo. The craftsmen select wood of similar thickness, but its pattern is always unique.

The forks and bends of the branches have a practical use too. A trunk embracing a beam holds it firmly, and the diagonal braces stiffen the whole structure. So the natural form not only decorates but also works.

The color of the trunks is warm, honey-toned, with darker spots at the knots. In the sun the wood simply glows, and in the late afternoon, when the light falls at a slant, every irregularity of the surface stands out. It is a quality that smooth, industrially planed posts do not have.

A board wall and a branch low fence

On one side there is a low wall of wide vertical boards. Narrower battens cover the joints between the boards, so the wall looks like the finish of a traditional country building. On top it is covered by a wide rail on which you can put a cup or a plate. The wall protects from the wind and from prying eyes on that side.

On the front side, instead of the wall, a low fence of knotty branches is built. Upright twigs with trimmed branch stubs are fixed between two horizontal branches. A low fence like this is light: it lets through light and the view, yet clearly marks the edge of the gazebo. It goes beautifully with the trunk columns, because it is made of the same natural wood.

The combination of wall and low fence lets you create sides of different openness. It is worth turning the closed wall toward the wind or the neighbors, and the low fence toward the garden or the forest, where you want to see the view.

Inside stand a table and benches. Sitting on the bench by the wall, your back rests on the boards and your gaze goes through the branch low fence into the yard. UAB “Laukbaldis” also makes solid oak outdoor furniture, so the table and benches can be ordered together with the gazebo and their size matched to the interior.

A shingle roof and a raised floor

The hip roof is covered with wooden shingles laid in dense rows. The ridges and roof edges are covered with boards painted dark brown, which accentuate the shape of the roof and protect the joints from rain. The roof projects widely beyond the columns, so those sitting at the table are in the shade even at midday.

Beams and rafters can be seen under the roof. It is an open structure without a ceiling, so the gazebo looks tall and spacious, and the wood under the roof is well ventilated. Laukbaldis makes shingles for roofs, so the roofing is chosen together with the whole structure.

The floor of wooden boards is raised above the ground and rests on concrete blocks. It is a simple and practical solution: air circulates between the ground and the floor, so the lower beams dry faster after rain. In addition, a raised floor gets less dirty, and grass does not grow past its edge.

A raised floor also lets you put the gazebo where the ground is not perfectly level. The height of the blocks is chosen so that the floor is level, and the difference between the ground and the floor is covered by the base frame. The photo clearly shows that the edge of the floor is higher than the lawn, so you step into the gazebo as onto a low step.

Who a rustic garden gazebo suits

A natural-wood gazebo suits best where there is a lot of nature around: a homestead at the edge of a forest, by a lake, a rural tourism place or a large garden with old trees. It looks especially good next to natural stones, wooden buildings and wild plants.

  • For family dinners in summer: a table with benches fits inside.
  • For receiving guests at a homestead, when the house is cramped.
  • For rest after work in the garden, when you need shade on a hot day.
  • As a shelter at a campsite or resting place visited by many people.

A gazebo like this can look good in a more modern yard too, if you want one bright, nature-inspired accent. But then it is worth thinking about how it will go with the house and the other buildings. Curved trunks show themselves best in a spacious place where they can be seen from farther away.

The gazebo is used not only in summer. In spring it is pleasant to sit in the sun when the wind is still cool, and in autumn to watch the trees change color. In winter outdoor furniture can be kept under the roof so that it is not under the snow.

The spot for such a gazebo is worth choosing with the sun and the wind in mind. If it stands on an open lawn, as in the photo, it will get plenty of sun and dry quickly after rain. If you want more coolness, it can be built in the shade of trees, though then more needles and leaves will fall on the roof.

Ordering and care

The Laukbaldis website shows only typical examples, so before calling think about which sides will be closed, what size of gazebo you need and what furniture you would like to see inside. If the spot is uneven, tell us about it: the solution for the base depends on the plot. Also think about whether you will want a path, lighting or extra furniture outdoors by the gazebo.

Outdoors, wood suffers from moisture and sun. Once a year, preferably in spring, inspect the bottoms of the trunks, the branch forks and the floor. If the surface has turned pale or rough, renew the protective coating made for exterior wood. Remove leaves and needles from the roof and the floor, especially if the gazebo stands by pines. Small cracks that appear as the trunks dry are natural and usually do not harm the structure.

You will find more examples in the section wooden gazebos. Works in a similar spirit are the gazebo with a shingle roof No. 16, the rustic gazebo No. 25-11 and the wooden windbreak shelter No. 15-8. Look for tables and benches in the section oak garden and outdoor furniture.

Frequently asked questions

Will all the trunks be the same as in the photo?

No, natural trunks are different in shape every time. The craftsmen select wood of similar thickness and character, so every gazebo is unique.

Why is the floor raised on blocks?

A raised floor ventilates better, so the lower beams dry faster after rain. The most suitable base is worth discussing according to the soil of your plot.

Can more sides be closed with a board wall?

Yes, the layout of walls and low fences is agreed individually. It is worth turning the closed side toward the wind or the plot of the neighbors.

Is a natural-wood gazebo suitable for a small yard?

It is, if its size is chosen to fit the yard. Even so, curved trunks show themselves best in a more spacious place where they can be seen from farther away.

How do I look after the trunk columns?

In spring inspect the bottoms of the trunks and the branch forks, because moisture lingers longest there. If the surface has turned pale, renew the protective coating.

How do I order gazebo No. 16-1?

Call us and quote the product number. We will discuss the size, the closed sides, the roofing, the base and the furniture.
