Oval outdoor table with benches and chairs “Oval” No. 2

Oval outdoor table with benches and chairs “Oval” No. 2

In short: “Oval” No. 2 is an oval outdoor table made of solid oak with two benches and four chairs. The rounded ends of the tabletop let more people sit at the table, and the crossed legs give it stability. The size, the number of seats and the finish are agreed individually with each customer.

The oval outdoor table and its set

The photo was taken in late autumn: the grass is covered with frost, and the light oak wood stands out sharply against the grayish background. The set stands right on the lawn, next to a log building and a wooden gazebo with railings.

The table. The tabletop is made of several long planks, and its ends are cut in an arc, so from above the table looks like an elongated oval. Thin gaps can be seen between the planks, through which rainwater runs off. The tabletop is held up by two pairs of crossed legs joined by a longitudinal beam. The crossed support rests widely on the ground, so the table stands steadily even on a lawn that is not quite level.

The benches. Both benches have backrests made of one wide plank. The top of the backrest of the bench on the left is left naturally wavy, while the backrest of the bench on the right is gently curved. The bench legs are crossed as well, so the whole set looks unified.

The chairs. Four chairs are arranged around the table. The backrest of the front chair is made of vertical slats joined by a row of round wooden dowels. The rear chair on the right has armrests and a backrest made of one plank. The shapes of all the chairs differ slightly, so the set does not look like a factory series.

In the background you can see a building stacked from round logs and a wooden gazebo whose railings are made of winding balustrades of natural branches. Next to such structures the light oak furniture looks like part of one ensemble. It is a good hint on how to combine the accents of a yard: when the furniture, the gazebo and the other structures are made of wood in a similar style, the yard looks well thought out even if each element appeared at a different time.

In the photo the surface of the furniture is smooth, the color is even, and no signs of wear can be seen. After a few years outdoors, oak takes on a slightly richer or grayer shade, depending on how often the furniture is looked after.

What the “Oval” set consists of

The table lists what can be seen in the photo of this typical example and what is not there.

ItemIn the photo
Oval tabletop of long planksYes
Crossed table legs with a beamYes
Benches with backrestsYes, two
ChairsYes, four
ArmrestsYes, on at least some of the chairs
Wooden dowels in the backrestYes, on the front chair
Cushions or coversNo

Benches and chairs together allow flexible seating of guests: benches are convenient for a family with children, and chairs with armrests will especially please older people, who find it easier to stand up while leaning on them.

Why the oval shape is convenient

The corners of a rectangular table take up space, but it is uncomfortable to sit at them. The edges of an oval table are curved, so those sitting at the ends do not bump their knees against corners and can see each other. This makes conversation at the table more shared, much as at a round table, while the long shape lets you seat more people.

Rounded edges are safer when children run around the yard: there are no sharp corners to bump into. In addition, it is easier to walk past an oval table when it stands in a tighter spot, such as a gazebo or on a small terrace.

An oval table is also convenient when you need to pull up an extra chair. At the rounded end it fits naturally and bothers nobody, whereas at the end of a rectangular table an extra person often sits as if apart from the rest. That is why the oval shape suits celebrations very well, when the number of guests is not known exactly in advance.

The light, almost natural oak color gives this set a feeling of lightness. It goes well with log buildings, a green lawn and stone paving. If darker tones dominate in your yard, the shade of the finish can be discussed when you order.

Solid oak outdoors and how to look after it

Laukbaldis makes its outdoor furniture from solid oak, meaning whole timber. Oak is hard and dense, so furniture made from it is heavy and sturdy. The wind will not tip such a table over, and the benches do not shift when several people sit on them at once.

Look closely and you will see clear rings, knots and the natural pattern of the planks in the photo. The furniture is made by experienced craftsmen, who do not hide these marks, so even sets of the same model differ slightly from one another. This is not a flaw but a feature of living wood.

Outdoors, oak may change color a little over time, and in a dry summer small cracks sometimes appear at the ends of the planks. This is the usual reaction of wood to changes in moisture and temperature. Regular care helps slow these changes.

The photo with frost is a reminder that garden furniture spends more than just the summer outdoors. A few simple habits are enough to keep the oak looking good for a long time:

  • In autumn sweep off fallen leaves, because wet leaves leave dark stains on the tabletop.
  • Before winter, clean the furniture, let it dry and, if possible, carry it under a roof.
  • If the set spends the winter outdoors, cover it with a breathable cover. A tight plastic film traps moisture, and mold may start to grow on the wood under it.
  • In spring, when the surface has dried, coat the furniture with an oil made for exterior wood. Coat the ends of the planks and the bottoms of the legs especially carefully.

A light finish needs a little more attention than a dark one, because dirt shows more on it. Usually it is enough to wash the surface with a mild soap solution and rinse it with clean water. It is better not to use strong cleaners or high-pressure washers, because they roughen the wood surface.

Where an oval garden table fits

This set is meant for a larger group: with two benches and four chairs, a whole family can sit at it, with room left for guests. It suits places where people eat and socialize often:

  • At a farmstead or rural tourism site, where large groups gather at one table.
  • By a grill or an outdoor kitchen, so that it is only a few steps from the fire to the table.
  • Under a roof. In a spacious gazebo the set is less exposed to rain and sun. You will find examples in the section wooden gazebos for the garden.

Before placing the set, measure the spot. Leave enough room around the table so that you can still walk past when the chairs and benches are pulled out. If the furniture will stand on a lawn, it is worth putting slabs under the legs, so that the legs do not sink into soft ground and dry faster after rain.

Also pay attention to the sun. A light surface heats up less at midday than a dark one, so such a set suits an open spot too. Still, it is more pleasant to sit longer where a shadow from a tree, the house or the roof of a gazebo falls in the afternoon. If the table will stand near the house, it is convenient to have a hard path from the kitchen to it, so that you do not have to push through wet grass carrying dishes.

What to think about before ordering

Since the dimensions and the composition are agreed individually, it is worth answering a few questions before you call. Then the conversation will be shorter, and the set will suit your yard better.

  • How many people sit at the table daily and how many on holidays? The length of the table and the number of benches and chairs depend on it.
  • Where will the furniture stand? For a gazebo or a terrace the table has to be chosen according to its interior dimensions, while on a lawn there is usually more room.
  • Who needs armrests? Chairs with armrests are more comfortable for sitting longer, while benches without armrests are easier to push under the table.
  • What shade do you want? A light finish, as in the photo, brings out the oak pattern, while a darker one hides dirt better.

Frequently asked questions

How many people can sit at the Oval table?

The photo shows two benches and four chairs, so a larger family or a group of guests can sit comfortably at the table. The exact number of seats depends on the length of the table, which is agreed individually.

Can I order just a table with benches, without chairs?

Yes, the composition of the set is discussed with each customer. You can choose only benches, only chairs or a combination of them.

Why are the table legs crossed?

The crossed support rests widely on the ground and keeps the table from wobbling. The longitudinal beam additionally joins the two pairs of legs.

Is a light finish suitable for outdoor furniture?

Yes, but dirt and leaf stains show more on a light surface. Furniture that is cleaned regularly and coated with oil keeps its good color for a long time.

Can the furniture be left outside in winter?

Solid oak is resistant, but in winter it is best to keep the furniture under a roof. If that is not possible, cover it with a breathable cover rather than a tight film under which moisture would build up.

How do I order the Oval set?

Call us and quote No. 2. We will agree on the table size, the number of seats and the finish.
